You are indeed right on the requirement (http://wpcal.firetree.net/ 
faq/). I would definitely nudge your host to do that upgrade -- MySQL  
3.x usage is drifting away.

In fact, you'll likely see WordPress 2.1 do away with support of that  
version in the future...
