thanks, matthew - you're absolutely correct. my server is using PHP 4.4.6, although they have announced an imminent upgrade to PHP 5. it's a shared server so i have no control. so i'll be patient and wait for your fix or their upgrade - whichever happens first. thanks for all your hard work. simon
