[EventCalendar] custom fields in Upcoming Events widget

Thank you, Damon. Your reference post looks exactly like what I need.
I do not have a lot of experience customizing themes. So, I am not
certain where the first block of code belongs. I think it belongs in a
custom functions.php file. Is that correct? If that is correct, I will
continue to research on my own to learn how to implement that.
If that is incorrect, can you nudge me in the right direction?
